Study finds that Texting While Driving is Much More Dangerous than Drunk Driving |
|
Driving under the influence of alcohol has long been demonized by groups such as MADD and state governments. Studies have shown that talking on a cell phone is actually just as dangerous, if not more so. Now, it turns out that it is even more dangerous to drive while text messaging – a habit of growing concern, especially among young drivers. A study conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory, in England, confirms what common sense should tell us – that driving while texting is dangerous. Test subjects had a 35% slower reaction time while text messaging than when paying full attention. By contrast, drivers who were legally under the influence of alcohol had their reaction times slowed by only 12%. Text messaging also severely hampered other driving skills. Steering control while text messaging was 91% worse. Texting drivers demonstrated significant trouble maintaining proper distances from cars ahead and also found it difficult to keep in their own lanes. Of course, this does not mean that driving under the influence of alcohol is a good idea. it just puts the problem into better perspective. Texting is particularly pernicious among young drivers. A recent poll of 3,000 drivers aged 18-24 revealed that amost half read or sent text message while driving.
